Following are some questions and comments about the current status of the IERS Combination Pilot Project. If anybody can respond, I would appreciate it very much. * website -- The IERS has a website at http://www.iers.org/iers/about/wg/wg3/cfp_cpp.html but it contains no new information since the time the CPP proposals were submitted. There is a separate site at TUM but it also contains no new information. There is no public indication that I can find that the CPP is actually underway; no IERS Message has ever been sent. In particular, I would expect to find the information provided in the letter from Markus on 04 April concerning location of data files, naming conventions, etc. * communications -- The cpp@iers.org e-mail exploder seems to be dormant (except for this message and the one from Zuheir and me last month). I can find no message archive. * Nice meeting -- I did not see any summary of the Nice splinter meeting nor any posting of the material presented there. This is unfair to the people who prepared material and to those who could not attend. * downloading data files -- Access to the data system via active ftp only is extremely inconvenient. It should be accessible via any browser or wget. When I try to navigate the site manually, I can find no data files now. Earlier there seemed to be IGS GPS solution files and DORIS solutions from Pascal. Now the intra-technique directories all seem to terminate in an inaccessible "bkg" directory. Even if the current system actually contained data files, it would not be possible to use it for any practical purposes because automated access is necessary. * solution types -- As Zuheir and I emphasized at the Nice meeting, it is essential (not simply desirable) to have long time series of technique solutions. No meaningful inter-technique combinations are possible until several time series are available, as long as possible. * workshop -- The question of a Fall workshop was raised in the CPP CfP and in Nice but no further information has been provided. While a splinter meeting might be useful, a full workshop seems pointless to me without at least 6 months time to process and examine some long solution sets. If I have misunderstood anything, please accept my regrets and please correct me. Best regards, --Jim
