Dear colleagues, for your information the following session will be held at the next AGU Fall Meeting, San Francisco, December 5-9, 2005. The deadline for abstract is September 8 and is now approaching rapidly. G11: Challenges in the Determination and Maintenance of an Accurate and Reliable Terrestrial Reference Frame Conveners: Christopher Cox, Pascal Willis, Alexander Franklin Mayer Global and temporally continuous monitoring of sea-surface and ice-surface topography, gravity field changes, and ground motions needs to be conducted in a uniform terrestrial reference frame. Development of an integrated and uniform reference frame requires precise modeling of the corrections as well as estimation of suitable empirical parameters that allow the different technologies to contribute without contaminating the resulting reference frame with errors. GPS, SLR, VLBI, and DORIS network observations all contribute to solution development, with overlapping but not redundant contributions. The solution process is complicated by the non-uniform temporal and spatial distribution of the geodetic networks. This session will focus on the geodetic networks, the modeling challenges in consistently merging these data sets to support the end use applications, as well as the effects of network evolution.
