          Title:   New director at the IERS Central Bureau
          Author:  Chris Reigber, Chairman of the IERS Directing Board
 
     As announced by the President of the French National Scientific Council 
     for the IERS Central Bureau, Prof. F. Barlier, and discussed by the IERS
     Directing Board on December 10, 1997 at its last meeting in San
     Francisco, the director of the Central Bureau since the creation of IERS
    (1 Jan 1988), Martine Feissel, is resigning from this function on 31
     December 1997. As of 1 January 1998, she will be replaced by Daniel
     Gambis, also Astronomer at Paris Observatory.
 
     Otherwise, the organisation of the Central Bureau remains unchanged.
     The former and new directors have committed themselves to insure a 
     smooth transition of tasks and services.
