Reigber, chairman of the IERS Directing Board --------------------------------------------------------------------------- In connection with the GEOFORUM 1998 the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ) will organize the 1998 IERS WORKSHOP on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of creating the International Earth Rotation Service. The Workshop will take place in Potsdam, Germany from Monday, 28 Sept. to Friday, 2 Oct. 1998 in the new GFZ buildings on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam. WORKSHOP PROGRAMME Convener: Ch. There are rooms available in the conference area for parallel splinter meetings. All chairpersons of committees, commissions or other groups desiring space for splinter meetings are kindly asked to provide the Local Organizing Committee with full details as soon as possible. Conference Facilities The meeting rooms will be equipped with one 5 x 5 cm slide projector and two overhead projectors. Special requirements have to be announced at the Local Organizing Committee prior to the meeting. Conference Office The Conference Office will be located in the Foyer area of the GFZ conference building. It will be open every day from 9 am to 6 pm. Pre-Registration Participants are advised to register in advance by using the Registration Form. The pre-registration fee is 120 DM/person before 31 August 1998. Afterwards, the registration fee is 150 DM/person. Only cash payment in Deutsche Mark or US Dollars will be possible at the Workshop site. No credit cards, cheques, purchase orders will be accepted. The fee includes all attendant costs of the Workshop plus break service each day and a reception. Accommodation Participants are advised to book their accommodation well in advance. Please find enclosed a list of the hotels and pensions in the Potsdam area, which are close to the Workshop location. You are responsible for making your own reservations directly with the hotel of your choice or with the Potsdam Information Service. Lunch will be available at the GFZ Casino which is located in the conference building. Banks and Money Exchange Hotels provide limited check cashing services. Most banks exchange foreign Travellers checks and currencies. Travel The usual travel to Potsdam for foreigners is by plane to Berlin-Tegel or Berlin-Schonefeld airports. There are railway, bus and taxi services from the airports to Potsdam. The distance from Berlin-Tegel is approximately 35 km and from Berlin-Schonefeld 40 km. Between airport Tegel and the city train station Zoologischer Garten there is a bus shuttle (Bus No. X9) and between airport Tegel and the train station Charlottenburg another bus shuttle (Bus No. 109). City train connections are from Berlin to Potsdam-Stadt (S3 and S7). The one-way taxi price is about 60,00 DM. Weather In September/October, weather can be expected to be moderate with temperatures ranging from 5 degree C. during the night and not higher than 20 degree C. during daytime.
